This week's theme comes with a little Twist!
We're gonna do this Cuttle Inc. Group line up!
Everyone is going to draw an illustration following the format below:
Theme: My Wings
Punishment: Mirror
Start Date: 10th March 2010
Deadline: 17th March 2010
1. Draw a PORTRAIT of yourself or a character that represents you:
+ His/her/its BACK is facing the audience. Refer to this image [http://bit.ly/a
+ Must have wings
+ Must be standing up
+ Show complete top half of body.
+ Plain White background
2. Any type of wing design that represents YOU.
3. Yes, you/your character can look over his/her/its shoulder / twist the waist/ hold a gun/ be buck naked. Pose as you want, as long as you draw yourself standing up and we can see the complete top half of the body, the back and the wings.
4. Use Plain white background cos maybe we're gonna cut and paste everyone into one big pic! Maybe turn it into desktop wallpaper or something. See how it goes.
Have fun!
I found it a little hard to portray self through this medium. But then again I always find it hard to portray self. See in it what you will =)
Following is the detail of the wings

Title: My Wings
Duration: 3 hours
Software: Photoshop CS3
I really thought that I will be doing this very last minute but I suddenly hv this feeling that I must try this new style now.
I got lost between wanting to made myself bare or with clothing. But finally decided on naked. Why? Because I wanted to put a Black Wing tattoo on my back. I want my wings to represent my strength & weakness. My white wing represents my strength whereas my black wing represents my weakness.
Strength is something I gain everyday with new experiences. That's why I hv a large white wing & it keeps growing bigger. But at the same time i must be careful or it will be rip out from me one day.
Why i made the black wing a tattoo? Cuz no matter what, I'll always hv a weakness. A weakness that I cannot get rid off, only I can suppress it as small as possible.
Note: Btw if you ask, nudity represents I'm an open person. That's all I hv to say. XP

I don't wanna go for a self-portrait, so thought I would go with the next closest thing: My In-a-Guy. I think Reeis already mentioned in before but we had this comic idea where we'd have all of us and our friends in our opposite gender. Well, this kinda works because I'm a tomboy anyway.
A plain long-sleeve shirt is what I always wear, the trump card to show I love playing games (but I think the message kinda slipped), the book is... questionable material, and the Cactuar and Mickey phone straps show my interests. I wasn't sure what kind of wings to show myself but I definitely don't deserve white wings because I'm too 'rotten' for it so I went for black instead, like a 'fallen angel'. :P

Well this is me..or what I hope looks like me..And as for the wings?I hope that when you look at the wings you will have your own interpretation of my personality..ha
--Submitted by Andrew
Decided to make a simple design basically because my style is never too fancy and exaggerating (after all it's suppose to represent me, right??) :p
If you look carefully at my wings....
The upper part of the wing is a upper case "M", and the lower part of the wing is a lower case "h" (might not be obvious at 1st glance...but look carefully hehe)
I'm lousy in figure drawing, so i made the whole figure pitch black. haha i love black!! So yea..that's my wings~

i have been extremely busy so gomen~ this is as much i can do for now.
--Submitted by Natasha
um....... yeah that is supposed to be me.
i wish i had that hair colour tho.
XD;
Interpretation:
but sometimes this peace-loving has a negative effect, because I like to fly (ha, pun intended) away from conflict if i can't find a peaceful solution to a problem..
and... i cannot offer an interpretation on why i am portrayed without a shirt on (ahaha). sorry. it was automatic to me XD
drawn using mechanical pencil, and coloured in OpenCanvas.

What?! Submission was yesterday?!! Dang it, i'll get to it today~ Sorry guys.

Lol Adam!
@mine : Small wings for small experience :P
@Y'ng : I love the idea and your execution, and great test on a new style :) The area between the tip of the nose and her right eye could use more subtle shading because currently it seems a little like the bridge of her nose is kinda wide. The black wing is done nicely but it doesn't feel like it follows the shape of the shoulder blade which might curve out in that area. Looks almost like a marker art :D
@Maiki : A nice portrait you paint :) Though I love it down to the reflected lighting on the wings, it's a little disappointing (for lack of a nicer word) that you didn't portray more in your wings.
@Andrew : I'll have you know that it does look a little like you :) I feel your chin and nose and slightly shorter and more shapely and your proportion has a slightly smaller hear with a thicker neck to go with it. Nice different way of portraying attachment of your wings to your back. I can't really read into the expression of your wings though, it seems a little confusing to me.
@May Hooi : iPod ad much? :D Nice design for the wings and I love the double loop. However, the extra strokes accompanying those lines feel a bit odd... like pencil sketch you didn't manage to erase. Perhaps can see the full length of the wings and not cut the bottom bit off? :)
@Nat : Lolz! It is indeed you. I cant tell if you're trying to portray yourself though since the hair here is kinda short.
@Sara : Pretty :3 But the left wing looks a little bigger than the right wing? Also, very uniform :)

Hey girls and guy...Very cool theme this week
Haha good luck Adam!! :)
@Daph : Though you just drew her with her back facing us her overall posture and pose does resemble you..haha.I like the detailing and strings on the wings but the right wing looks very hard and stiff.like jagged rocks than soft feathers.
@Y'ng : Wow I love this style of yours!! Really awesome job!! Hmmm I just think her black wing tattoo looks abit flat cause its on her shoulder blade so maybe it should curve a but more?..Other than that she looks fabulous..and very toned..haha
@Maiki : Cool portrait.He looks very cheeky eh...
@May Hooi : Damn I see the M but cant see the H..:(..haha.I think its a sweet picture but um the I feel that there is too much empty space of white above her .And the end of the wings looks like it got cropped off and didn't end..
@Nat : 5,4,3,2,1..LIFTOFF...:P.I like the pose..So playful and carefree..And you put a spin on the wings.Very Cool.. think it is the style that you are portraying but the thickness of the lines make it look abit stiff.
@Sara : That's a very sweet pic.You captured the peace loving part of your personality really well. Like Daph said the left wing slightly bigger than the right..And the wings looks abit stiff..Like maybe if you add some stray feathers around you know when you spread your wings there will be some feather that starts floating around..just to soften it.

@Daphne, @Andrew
it must be an optical illusion coz they're both the same wing XD hahaha. i only rotated the right wing a little, so it looks kinda tall.. makes it look bigger i think.
@Adam, you didn't realize yesterday was Wednesday ah? XD
i'll comment on everyone's work sometime tonight!!

@Daphne: OMG can I have the wings detail image as a desktop wallpaper? *A* your colouring for the wings is beautiful! i don't even know how you manage to come out with that look! it looks so fine and delicate~
@Y'ng: waaaa this style is also very nice! i love the wings and her hair~ speedpaint?
@Maiki: Nice to see your innaguy again :P missed him! hahahah. i totally lolled at "questionable material" bahahah. very simple and nice! i really like how you used accessories to show his interests. i didn't even think of that!
@Andrew: whoaaaa your wings! i like how it looks misty, like it's an aura or something. not sure if it's on purpose, but i like the effect! =D
@May Hooi: hehehehe this is so you. i love the black and blue colours!
@Nat: this is sooooo you hahahah. why am I not surpised it had to be a jetpack? :P
@Adam: um..... *sweat* like i said, you don't actually need to do the bottom half hahaha *shields eyes* i also like her tattoo!

@andrew & @daph: Yeah, i aso notice about the black wing not able to blend with the skin nicely. tried lightening/multiplying it but it turns light grey. Can't see it's black anymore. >.< Any idea how to solve this?
@sara: thankies! nah, this is not speedpaint, if it's speedpaint, i shall be able to fin this in an hour. not 3 hours. ^^;
March 19, 2010 at 2:24 AM
@daph: I love the details that you put in for this esp the strings around the wings. But i feel your wings are very hard and stiff. Is it purposely done it that way? Will be better if you can explain more about your artwork. ^^
@maiki: LOL! whether you do your girl or guy version, they still look like u. Nice & simple colouring! but i was expecting some cool design wings from you. XP
@andrew: yeah, this guy definitely look like you. LOL! Your wing design is awesome! Lovin it! but i think you can work on your outline & colouring. Here's some lil tutorial that might help you on it: http://sandara.deviantart.com/art/Basic-Brush-Tutorial-86379458 Overall, great improvement! XD
@mh: love the idea of how you made your wing using your signature. yeah, i can see it. But you should give some try on figure drawing cuz u got a nice silhouettes there to start off. ^^
@nat: Nice rocket wings u got there! "TO INFINITY AND BEYOND!" HAHA! This is the most unique wing i've seen in here. GREAT! XD
@sara: Just one look, i immediately know that the girl is you. I like it cuz it's plain, simple & nice! But err.... i can see some gray square & white patches in the background. ^^;
@adam: LOL! I'm surprise u actually forgotten your time! Anyways, i'm glad that u submitted this. thank u! Your coloring here is good! Like the tattoo at her back. XD
March 19, 2010 at 8:19 AM
@Sara : I'm surprised you want it as a wallpaper XD So messy.
@Y'ng : It's not so much the blend of the wing, it's the way it is shaped along the back. I think both me and Andrew would agree to it curving towards the left instead of right as it is now. The form is making your shoulder blade look sunk.
@Andrew, Y'ng : Hmm the wings do look stiff and hard probably because there's so very little movement in them and they stick out...
Explanation?
The wings were pretty experimental. My first idea was to have paper wings, but I thought it wouldn't be as noticeable as paper, so I began to add more blend and tone. I can say I was portraying that there was more to one side of me in terms of my outlook. The happy sides on the left, the bad sides on the right. The little artifacts represent some sharp years I've had. Beanie, Christmas, luck, fun, and dark sticky times with one black year that infects some of the others. And they both tie together at some point.
Small wings to signify the length and effect of my life that I'm sure will grow out =)
As for technique, first I painted a grey layer of wings, then used a very light grey to paint over the highlights using opacity and flow to generate the blend you see now. Added the objects and strings/cobwebs and more shape to the shadows by using a light hue with my brush set to Multiply. One of my mistakes I guess is leaving the dark wing a little streaky... can't really see it on my screen so forgive me for that =)
Hope that clears it up a bit more. If you're free Sara, can you put this up under the image? XD

@daph: hmmm... i seriously hv to look into this. but u both are right that the shape is seriously off here. Will probably use warp tool to test it.
March 19, 2010 at 1:03 PM
@Sara : Wah you are the 1st member in Cuttle to create an optical illusion with your work..haha sweet!!..:P I really thought one looked slightly bigger than the other then when I looked at it again today the right one looked bigger pulak...confirm optical illusion or I'm not getting enough sleep..haha
Thanks!!Yeah I actually wanted it to be like that..More like the wings are something I summon from within so the shape had to be more wild and free..Thats was what I was going for..
@Y'ng : Thanks for the link!!I love her style!!must try it!! thanks ya
I think to me it more cause the tattoo looks like it was drawn on a flat surface..but the shoulder part has contours and all..so maybe you could try warping the tattoo to create a more 3d effect?
@Adam : Whoa did you get a makeover?...:P..NICE wing and tattoo..
Though I really hope you don't take this the wrong way and all.One this I love about cuttle is that all the member are really honest and constructive with each other..I know how great you are with your female character designs, They are really awesome but the thing is I feel like that is what you have been doing since joining cuttle..Nothing wrong with it really but I just kinda hope to see something new from you because cuttle is meant for us to experiment and improve..And I think everyone has tried different styles and techniques and the results have been really great.So I was hoping to see something new and different from you too...:)

hey guys its me, nat.
@daph: very nice indeed i find it unique. my only comment is i think you should add more light and shadow so it has more shape on the wings and character ^ ^
@ying: i still feel like some shades of the art a bit messy. but if its a style then okay. just wondering coz that's all i can comment since the last comment :s
@maiki: no comment XD its simple and nice!
@andrew: love your wings! they remind me of the villians in prince of persia PS3 but in a more pretty way~
@mh: i love this simplicity! very graphic and it works! *thumbs up*
@sara: HUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! NAKED!!!!!! *bloods*
@adam: HUAAAAA!!!! ANOTHER NAKED...wait.. that's suppose to be u... *pukes*

Whats with all the shirtless human figures xD
ok...back to the comments :p
@Daphne: This back view reallly reaaaalllly reeeeaaalllyyy looks like you. it's so u! and great details with the wings, those tiny little things and fine lines must have taken quite some time. good job!
@Yng: Woooo..sexyyyy :p love the colouring and shading. her arm look a little muscular, almost like a man's arm (unless you are trying to portray a strong woman) oh btw, this reminds me of Sephiroth!
@Maiki: haha very smart of u to use In-A-Guy to portray yourself, something like... your alter ego xD
@Andrew: looks like you found a style here :D the effect on the wings looks really cool. u are the master of smudge tool!! xD
@Nat: Really creative. while all of us are drawing wings type of wings, u came up with rocket wings! does that mean u can fly?? xD
@Sara: Clean, simple and nice. it looks so innocent *-*
@Adam: u are a girl??? :O hahahaha but nice drawing :p
