star

"I believe everyone cradles a star in their hands.

Everyone has a chance to twinkle and shine in the night sky, but the most important part is how and who you choose to shine on in the dead of dark."

I've been testing painting techniques in Photoshop and trying to see what kind of colouring I can come up with. I'm not too good yet in realistic art, so I used a lot of photo reference to get the stance of the person right. Painting the hands was the hardest part of this work. I've also recently installed my Wacom drivers and am testing how the pen pressure differentiates the work.

It's been a really thought provoking week whist I've had a bit more time to dedicate to art. This is my way of thanking the stars in my night, for without them it'd be too dark and frightening to move on.

Rainbow Stars

Title: Rainbow Stars
Duration: 3 hours 15 minutes
Software: Photoshop CS3

After I saw the cute star plushies from 95percent: New Year Party 2010, I couldn't help illustrating it for this theme. Whenever you're feeling lonely or down, all you have to do is hug them! They will brighten up your day!

For this artwork, I tested myself only using one custom brush with fix 50% opacity & 100% flow. It was kinda tough to blend the colors but I wanted to try out a new style. It came out quite well, plus it's faster than the previous ones. So YAY!

Btw, I decided to dedicate this artwork to 95percent. XD

reach.4.d.stars

No matter how many obstacles there is. Ups & Downs. Happiness & Sadness. Pain & Endearment in my heart.

I will still try my Best to reach for the stars.

you are a star!

Okay, when I saw the theme "star" and my punishment is to include a "basin" I was pulling my hair out thinking "I'm so DOOMED!!!". XD

Then a friend suggested "why don't you draw a superstar model in front of the toilet?" and I thought that's a good idea, until when it came to the last day of submission and I was rushing to draw that at work when I suddenly realised my own life and career.

I'm a designer, an artist, a video editor. I am a hidden star! I can create amazing things when I want to with no limits. I guess there's bound to be a hidden star in each and everyone of us. We just gotta open our eyes more and appreciate whatever talent or gift God has grant us :)

So yeah, back to this drawing. Its a last minute sketch of myself seeing through the toilet mirror as a star in my own messy drawing :P

Dream-maker and a Star

This is an illustration of my original character from a story that I wrote. He has no known name, but he is known as "Dream-maker". He sits in a field where there's no day, only night, and stars fall out of the sky for him. He makes dreams out of stars with his deft hands, and he lets the wind take it down the valley to a town that sleeps at night.

He's a good soul, he'd only make good dreams. :)

p.s: this is when he just started out as a dream-maker. (a young man perhaps?)

I wanted to do something in relation to "Star". This came out~ =.=

LATE SUBMISSIONS

star copy

1st thing that came to my mind when i saw the theme was the stereotypical star athlete and cheerleaders that we always see in high school or in teen movies/drama's..So i came up with this.

Cuttle - 'Star'

Late submission, sorry!

If I recalled correctly, fanarts seem to be allowed so I decided to draw something for my current favourite RPG, Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep.

There's a scene at the beginning of the game where the three main characters were gazing at shooting stars together, and that was their last happy moment together... forever. So when I saw the theme 'star' the first thing I thought of was this and I wanted to give a little tribute to them.

@Daphne: i. love. your. COLOURING STYLE OMG. And i so so so so love the concept behind it. everthing is perfect in my eyes. 5 stars! (no pun intended)

@Ying: heeee the pillows are so cute! very nicely done ying, my only crit that i can offer is that her torso is too straight. i love ur colouring style also!

@May Hooi: so cute!! i really love the "kids colouring" style. very light-hearted and playful.

@Kelly: whoaaa u must've taken a long time to do this. very nicely illustrated! i like how u made ur ladder bent, gives it a nice and whimsical feel.

@Nat: u can draw what!! lol!! XD anyway, very good concept. the basin thing is so not easy!

@Adam: i always envy the way u draw girls. sigh! i like how u interpreted "star" very differently from all of us.
maybe u should become a fashion designer hahahaha.

@Sara: Haha! Yeah, i notice the next day after I post up. I think it's the whole chest & waist area are totally distorted. I want to correct it but now rushing with a project. So it was really a quick one. XD But thanks for the comment!

To sara:- naaa..tat didnt take toooo long, i made a quick sketch and color asap in ofis!! XDXD i memang cari maut XDXD But it does took me 1 day to do it cos need to hide frm ppl so they cant see wat im doin XDXD

:Daphne: I like ur coloring skill too~! Damn!! i wana color like tat too, it looks like a oil painting thou its a PS work thats y im amazed wit the result. U got mai vote!! *wink*

:Y'ng: Cute star pillows! Nicely painted. And yea..u need to work on the cloths painting, it felt kinda stiff and her waist seems too straight XP (maype i shud try out ur brush technique, seems cool)

:MH: LOL!! u bet its a last min work XDXD but with ur simplicity n style is realli realli cute! Yeap u can do children's illustration book now XD

:Nat: Nice idea & concept~! *thumbs up*

:sara: dis ish nice~! cute character. Like the colors espeacially the light of the star that shine on the character. But maype u need to add some shadows to the ground and d grass so it wont seems plain :D

:Adam: Yo man!! As usual, miss ur girls drawing XP Good as alwez cept for the hands but She looks like sailor star XP

@Daphne: great colouring skill, love the light and shadow effect and the details of the hair. Nicely done :)

@Yng: colouring and shading is nice. somehow something (which i dont know which part went wrong) made the human look a little stiff...hmm

@Kelly: Very eye-catching artwork with a nice layout and attactive colours. although it looks simple, but less is more! u got my vote! woohoo ^^

@Nat: haha nice idea. its definitely not easy to have star + basin (what a weird combo) :P love the sketchy style

@Sara: nice colouring , only comment is, the grass looks a little bald hehe xD

@Adam: I've always admire your figure drawing skills *-*

Ahaha still not good enough :P

@Y'ng : Structurally, I'm agreeing with Sara and Kell. You seem to have fluidity and movement in your cloth for her sleeve on the right, but the rest could use more flow. The face is beautifully done :) Colour wise is good, though your tones make me wonder if you're using a Mac computer?

@May Hooi : Wish you had more time to colour and clean up though.

@Kell : Good job Kell! I like the twisty ladder and the cloudy background. All that's needed is perhaps some clean up for your pencil lines.

@Nat : Well you sure have a lot of supporters :) The idea is good, i'm glad you're having more confidence in yourself now. Don't sweat the small stuff! Would have been great to see this in colour and unlined paper XD

@Sara : The illustration is lovely but it looks like you ran out of time? Sounds like a good story you can cultivate.

@Adam : Proportionally it's a little odd, especially around the legs. Like Kell said, it really seems like a Sailor Ranger :)

well daphne, i think its better like that and with the lined paper coz from there it gives more of a personal feeling ahahhaaa :P i am really surprised bout the supporters O_o that was unexpected..

um okay, back to the comments XD

@ daphne: seriously u just gotta teach me to color like that! i have to agree with kell it looks like oil painting XD but i think it would be nice if u made the glow shine a lil more. u know, like a shine effect so it'll look magical coz right now its a bit flat? just a suggestion ^ ^' but way to go X3

@ ying : wont give the same comment bout the stiffness, so my suggestion is probly next time u'd wanna include drop shadows for the floating stars XP and i am always a fan of ur coloring!

@ mh: even if its simple and cincai but it gives like the japanese kind of cincai drawing of cute characters lol

@ kelly : did u notice that urs and mine are contrasting with each other? u are still reaching to be a star whereas i am already a so called star LMAO!!! yeah babeh i love this art of urs and that's why u got my vote! YAYS! and just a funny thought, it would be funny if i was the one holding the ladder for u at the bottom there LOL! ;) "kell! the fat! u got the freaking star yet??!" XD

@ myself : i think u should buck up more and make more neater art works coz u have been putting up messy works and altho it still works but c'mon! ur here to improve urself so start now! (yeah i know u guys are dying to say that to me too lol)

@ sara: i like the overall idea, the coloring and such but the ground is too plain and that's what bugs me about the drawing. try experimenting more next time. i know if u add a ground or more grass it wont look as interesting but i am sure there's bound to be a solution to this one. its tricky, but me likes and hope to see more of this kind of style from u :)

@ adam : yay! ur here! welcome!!! ^ ^ i am looking forward to see more models and robots from u *_* and please try ur best to color ur sketches coz i like ur coloring!

First of all, thanks for making me be a part of the Cuttles! I will force myself to do better in the coming weeks

@Sara:Me? Fashion design? I think not la, but i like clothes designs for characters, wanna cosplay? x3

@Daphne and Kelly: ya, i admit, it's really a sailor star theme i was going.

@Mh:I like it that you keep your art simple. Nice to see that.

@Nat: i'll try to color lil sum-sumthing in next week's one, k?

Well, on with the comments:

@Daphne: I would love to take ur drawing, frame it in an old wooden frame and display it in a museum! It's too nice to be shared by just us in this site~ Anyways, outstanding technigues of coloring and all around GREAT JOB!

@Ying: Why do i feel like im looking at Yuna from FF10-2 with her hair down? ^^ But that aside, your coloring techniques roxx! Need a little repair at the waist but still a good job.

@May Hooi: Ah-ha~ nice and simple...now that's art, haha. xD

@Kelly: Once i get to your company, first thing im gonna do is tell your boss what ur doing, ahaha~ just joking nia. Anyways, this is an Owssome drawing! I would never have imagined this drawing. Great job!

@Nat: Wa, you're a star now, eh? Cool, but i would have done the same concept too, with the basin and all (Basin? What the heck is that in the picture?). Great concept and nice drawing too~

@Sara: This is so much of a dreamy drawing, i cant help it but it does soothe my head everytime i look at it, maybe by the way the star glows, i dunno~ but overall a great pic!

@myself: what else can i say? I was worried i was off-topic on this one, i didnt sleep a day~ No joke. ^^;

One another note: where's maiki's piece? D:

I. CAN. FINALLY. COMMENT. YEEEEESSSS

@Adam: Sorry, had a little internal problem so I couldn't hand up my work. XD; I'll try to hand it up next time! Also, cute girl you got there! I like how 'starry' her outfit is!

@Daphne: THIS IS AWESOME! I love this! Love the way you rendered the colours in, great job you did there. :D

@Y'ng: I think Sara already pointed the anatomy error there but this is such a cute idea! XD

@MH, @Kelly: I love the children book feeling to these artworks! So fitting for the theme. :)

@Natasha: Cute! XD I like the idea you implanted in it, you being a hidden star and all, 'cause that's so true.

@Sara: Aaww, I love your Dream Maker! He sounds like an interesting character to see more of. I love the atmosphere you have for this artwork too! I think it'd have gotten more impact if you were able to show the night sky in the BG too, but this is still a great pic. :)

Yo! Before I start my comments, I really wan to THANK U ALL SOOOO MUCH for your cooperation regarding the comments. It's makes me very very happy to see this. I'm sure all of us are. XD

@daphne: Your fantastic colour scheme & brush technique really make this artwork a MASTERPIECE indeed. U gotta give me some tutorials on this. ^^

@MH: HAHA! Very cute! But maybe you should add more colours into it. Looks a bit unfinished. XP

@Kelly: U got my vote. I absolutely luv the entire composition & colouring for this. Esp the staircase. Do keep this up gurl! XD

@Nat: I totally applaud you for doing a superb job with your punishment. EXCELLENT WORK! Maybe you could clean up a bit of your outlines & do try colouring it. I know you CAN DO IT! XD

@Sara: I really wish to read the story for this work. It's very interesting! Oh, do try to clean up your lines & do some toning to bring out the image. ^^

@Adam: LOL! Sailor Star! Nice! But u definitely hv to try coloring cuz I know you're good at it. XD

@myself: SLAP* SLAP* SLAP* how on earth can you forget to check your figure properly b4 you pass up!? SLAP* SLAP* SLAP* (Red cheeks now ><)
