I'm sure the sheep were let out to the grazing pastures during the day though :P
This is more of a brush test than and actual idea. Just a simple little black sheep on a plain. I went straight to colour on a Photoshop canvas so I'm pretty happy with the results.

Being a black sheep myself, I've always wished that we can lead the flock one day.

First thing that came into mind when i thought of Black sheep is being alienated..so just thought of something dark yet ironic at the same time....

Poor white sheep had some black ink spilled on it...and now it's a BLACK sheep haha :p

Title: I'm A Black Sheep
Duration: 9 hours 45 minutes (including research & tutorials)
Software: SketchBook Pro & Photoshop CS3
I got lots of ideas for this theme. But decided to go for the most personal one to me. I think the message is already very clear to everyone. So I guess I don't need to explain it.
Anyways, I actually wanted to test out my human illustration esp the body proportion & the hair colouring. But being an idiot, I went overboard and drew 8 ppl! Suffered for it! I also wanted to try out cloth folding colouring but since the time doesn't permit, so I guess I'll do it in another artwork.

A ancient black sheep that loves sushi..
I think its salmon sushi.

Japan really has issues about people that stand out from the crowd and I remember my non-Asian friends complaining about being stared on pretty often in trains so I had to draw down this imagery.
This is rushed like hell, dude.

LATE SUBMISSIONS

I've always seen the joker card as the "black sheep" among the other cards in the deck. Don't you all agree? >)

@daphne: hahahahaha i like your concept of the white sheep being the "black sheep" in that situation XD clever!! i also really2 love the brush test. it looks so soft~~
@andrew: even tho i feel in technical terms it needs to be improved, the feeling and the idea of being alienated still comes through (thus making me feel actually disturbed hoho). so good job!
@may hooi: hehehe cute idea!!
@ying: ya i can totally relate to this >_< in technical terms, i notice the lower half of most of the people still looks flat. but it's okay, i'm sure ur still improving on that XD
@maiki: didn't look like u were rushing XD this is nice! also coz us non-japanese can get a glimpse into japanese culture in a different light.

Huaa this week really rush because of the new year! But great job everyone.
@Sara: Nice idea there, but execution could use a little more. It could be misconstrued that the black sheep is being chased away by the white flock (Even though they have no expressions). Or maybe to focus the radial glow background on the black sheep rather than in the middle.
@Andrew: The idea and irony of it is quite clear to see in your image. Anatomically, I can't quite make out the limbs and body parts of that character you used. If it was meant to be a human, you need to work on your human figure. Best way I know how to do that is to copy real life or other images. Tracing's a good way to start and also learning the 8 head proportioning. Perspective wise it's almost there. Small details like how his hand is laid flat on the ground do not tally with the tilt of the floor in the background. Nice go and I do hope you'll be able to benefit from posting here and we'll try to help you as much as we can.
@Mh: That looks like an ink monster instead of "some black ink"! Cute as always. Where did you get the brushes from?
@Ying: You're playing with dangerous perspectives in this image I feel. Especially around the parts where the legs and hands bend. I feel you could use one more degree of darkness for those areas because the thin shadow you've put on the back of the knee isn't that visible. The hair must have taken a lot of work to do. It's a little sad that the main characters hair ends in an odd point and the guy to the most right has almost a horizontal streak of white hair. Heartfelt idea I'm sure we can all identify with =)
@Kell: I see you've adopted a style =) Nicely done, though I'm not too sure about the left side of the salmon having the green tinge. Looks a little like mold. Ancient moldy sushi XD
@Maiki: Rushed like hell but still good so no worries. I like that you've taken a very everyday situation to use this theme on. One thing though about your crowd is that is seemed to be concentrated around the odd guy. It almost seems as though they're doing a "community service" by blocking him out of sight from the other people in the train.
As always I'll look forward to your comments and criticisms.

Hi Girls.1stly thanks for letting me join your group..haha..And thanks for the advise I really appreciate it.I wont really comment on the technical side cause I have alot to improve on and all of you are so much more advanced in that area..:P....and damn i need to get a proper tablet instead of using just a mouse!!
@daphne: I like how you twisted the view of who is the outcast and who is not.I also like how each of the black sheep has a different expression..one even looks sinister..haha nice!
@may hooi: I like the graphic ink splat though it kinda looks like the ink is eating that white sheep..:But it looks Very cool..
@ying: Whoa the hair must have taken you ages!! The shading looks great. And you really did capture the Black Sheep theme though you portrayed it as being someone that is different and not being an outcast which is a positive thing..:) The only thing is I just thought that the people look quite stiff but i think that was what you were going for?
@Kelly: I really like your background..but i don't really understand the concept
@maiki: This looks like it came out straight from a page of a comic..really nice!!

OMG! Thanks for the comments guys! A lots of great constructive criticism there. Definitely will help me in the next artwork.
@Sara: Yeah. It looks flat cuz I did not pay attention much with the clothing since 90% of the human is covered with clothes. But the next artwork, will definitely pay more attention to it. Thanks gurl! XD
@Daph: Haha! Surprising the hair was the fastest to do. the longest was clothes cuz i wanted to get the 3D shape out, but...kinda failed in that. Hehe! Really need to start learning about lighting & cloth colouring. Thanks for the comments!
@Andrew: Thanks dude! LOL! It supposed to look realistic cuz that's wat I'm gonna aim for this year. But... hehe seriously failed to do so. I still got a long way to learn. Note to self: neva do 8 ppl again unless I planned to do cartoon/manga style.

Alright now my turn to comment:
@daph: The first one took me quite awhile to get the joke cuz i didn't get the message at all. But once i got it, it was dam good & funny! The second one has really nice soft colour pencil feel. Maybe you should try using this style for your other works. XD
@sara: As daph mention, when i first look at it, i thought the black sheep is running away from the white sheep. Maybe you could do something like Peter Pan, "following the leader" where the black sheep in front, the others follow behind it in a long line. That will be much clearer. ^^
@andrew: The feel & the idea is awesome! You really blend them well dude! But i feel u need to improve your art to give more impact to your work. Do get a tablet if you can. ^^
@may: Errr... honestly, i really don't get about the ink spilled on the sheep. all I see is a white sheep just popping out from some weird bushes or something. ^^; Sorry ya.
@kelly: wow... seriously WOW! I neva expect you to do a fantastic job for your punishment. Dam impressed! Even though I didn't get the message at all but it's still good! XD
@maiki: i'll say, this is one hell of a great work for a last minute. you really did portray the black sheep extremely well in your everyday situation/life. But i personally think most ppl hv issue with anyone who stands out from the crowd. Even if you pretend not to pay attention, you'll still try to take a glimpse of him/her. XP

Don't want to sound like an ass here, but we could use commentary from from at least ALL the members of Cuttle Inc. Give and take.
Contribute please guys. We all want to improve...

ur not sounding like an ass daph dont worry. i was just away for a bit and now i am here to give comments too.
@ daph: ur first pic is so funny XD i like how u flip the 'black sheep' and the expressions u gave to them. definitely can put this in reader's digest or the newspaper. the brush test is soft. love it!
@ sara: love that kind of style! but yeah, maybe the expression could use a lil work coz i dunno if the whites are following the black as a leader or they are shooing him away.
@ andrew: welcome new comer! glad to see ur work up XD its psycho and messy, but i like the idea behind it. who cares about proportions! but i think the outlines could be a lil more thicker and the bg could use some light gradieant or light source if u wanna get away with that kind of style.
@ mh: reminds me of okami LOL!! love that brush and ur simplicity :)
@ y'ng: u won my vote! what attracted me was ur point of view, relating ur life as a black sheep. and i really admire how brave u are to play with that dangerous perspective! just the only comment is that small tiny women on the left looks like a real tiny women sitting on the man's shoulder instead of her being distant. maybe next time u could make the further characters look faded and the ones near the audience are clearer. that's what i learn from video compositing ;)
@ kell: then fat man XD CUTE!!!!!!!! ur painting has improved! its good u have ur own style now. but i feel like its too dark. always remember that colors that u use bring out the moods. and over there i dunno what mood u wanna show.
@ maiki: MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAAA!!!! LOVE IT! and heck i love ur perspective!
okay those are what i can say for now. and *bows* gomen everyone... i was a lil under the weather last week but i will get back on in submitting mood soon. thank u for ur support and understanding ^ ^
