Innocent Vietnamese Boy of Agent Orange

Title: Innocent Vietnamese Boy of Agent Orange
Duration: 5 hours 15 minutes
Software: SketchBook Pro & Photoshop CS3

The idea struck me during my trip to Vietnam while I was visiting the handicraft shop. I found that the handicrafts in the shop are done by artists who are affected by a disease called 'Agent Orange'. During the Vietnam War (1962-1971), the U.S. military sprayed a chemical called the ‘Agent Orange’ in South Vietnam, resulting deaths & disabilities as well as birth defects. Parents who are affected constantly giving birth to children with genetic deformities & this follows up to the next generation.

As you can see, the Vietnamese boy in the artwork has no legs due to the 'Agent Orange'. I decided to have him sew an artwork to show how these people make a living despite being a handicapped. The puppy under the table is his pet, not food. I know Vietnamese love to eat dog apparently. (-_-;)

It took me soo long to finish this artwork because I really lack of confidence in my illustration skills esp the colouring part. Made a lot of changes to get it right. Anyways, I'm quite satisfied with the result, though... I felt it could be better somehow.

Innocence

I think the image speaks for itself as a very traditional idea of innocence. To be able to see and believe in something before the truth comes to life.

Who knows how much we limit ourselves by discarded innocence.

Tainted Innocence

Ran out of time so this is a very rushed pic, where I chose a less interesting imagery in my head, I'm sorry.

Usually I don't like to give an interpretation of my own artwork and let people see it the way they want to and string it to the title, so... not much comment from me.

Innocence_byReeis_02

I originally wanted to do a illustration of some kids playing around, but the idea of Eve just stuck on me.
The drawing was originally just a random sketch of a woman.
Worked on it til it became an image of Eve - about to lose her innocence, for the taste of knowledge.

Left it in outlines cos I felt the color and the linework worked well together.
This also allowed me to color in the apple and make it more "real", more powerful than everything else.

Would like feedback on the snake's and Eve's gestures - do they look softly seductive enough?
I tried hard to create an illusion of weight in their gestures.

At times like these makes us wonder how far can we judge innocence? Or can innocence even be judged when it comes to certain situations?

What i want to portray in this drawing is that; a weapon is as innocent as a child. It only does things that it was created to do without knowing what is right or wrong. Yet it is always seen as the cruel one.

Color scheme is easy. Red for danger, white for light and the dark grey for solid metal. And no i wasn't being lazy... i think ;P

Blood splat brush was from corelila.deviantart.com/art/Splatter-Brushes-60718934 Thanks a lot this is GREAT! XD

Innocence...

The first thing that came to mind is a pair of innocent eyes..

Did this really last minute >.<

Innocence

Inspired by people whose stories have traveled to me: Stories of living in a destructive world with no end, but still having enough heart left to save whom they regard as innocent from the world that they live in.

Great Job cuttles! But... one is missing...

Looks like we got ourself the first member to be punished! WhooHoo!!!

Firstly,
damn, the art look GOOD displayed this way.

Secondly,
How can do we give individual comments to the artworks? Or do I stick them all here?

probably just write any and all critique here i guess ^^;; don't know how else to do it.

err... i feel ppl are gonna find difficult to comment, thus decided not to comment anything.

@Y'ng: noticing the missing legs gave me a shock and drove the message home. As we discussed on msn, it's hard to see the deformed fingers.

@Daph: U got my vote =D I like the fact u chose the traditional symbols of innocence.

@Maiki: ...is that black square the pink hand's holding a ink plate? Are you trying to use the "It's not me, I didn't do this, I'm innocent" angle?

@Me: <3 the snake [perasan!]

@Nat: <3! U're right, the blood looks awesome. Kudos to tying in the blood and the blank expression, I

got it.

@Sara: ...coloring is (o_o). The white... Don't despair, the idea is strong. I love the silhouettes.

Maybe u could emphasize them more rather than sticking the faces there, cos I can see u're having

difficulty linking the two elements together.

@Kelly: MWAAAHAHAHAAHAAHAAHA!!! PUNISHMENT!!! >DDD

@Reeis

yeap. I know. my colouring is horrible and the composition is XD;;; i haven't drawn properly for months.
hopefully after this will be better.

@Reeis

Drove the message home? Wat does it mean? Wrong message? Uh oh! O.O
Hmm...Maybe i should change the description for the deformed fingers. ^^

Oh btw, u forgot to comment May hooi.

@Sara:hey, hey, that's what this blog is for. We're all here to help each other improve, ne? One thing I've learnt from uni, it is ALWAYS better to submit something rather than waiting for something better to show up

@Y'ng: drove the message home = made the message clear to me XD

@ May Hooi: sorry, dear. I missed out my comment for ur work when I copied and pasted it from the Word Document I typed everything in ^^;;
thanks for pointing it out Y'ng

I like the idea = like pure everyday innocence. The danger in concepts like this is that it might be better expressed with a photograph, instead of an illustration.

@EVERYONE: HOoooIIII!!! Don't let me be the only one giving feedback here la!!! write a bit!!!

Okies! Here are my comments:

@Daphne: absolutely love it! nothing beats the traditional essence. however, i think the background design doesn't suit really well i my opinion. but u still hv my vote. XD

@Maiki: love the artstyle very much esp your colouring. but... i didn't quite get the message for it, gomen. ^^;

@Reeis: great idea! something dif than the rest. still need to work on your human proportion though. but i love your snake. ^^

@Nat: Love the blood splatter on the robot kid. Tks for sharing the links. XD

@May: Nice! but as yin said, ppl might think it is a photograph instead of an illustration unless you state in your description. ^^

@Sara: hv to admit, the description for your artwork is beautifully written. your idea is definitely there. but i feel that your colouring doesn't give much impact to your artwork. XP

Hey guys, sorry for not commenting over the weekend. Had a Christmas do and then my brain died.
Anywho...

@Y'ng: I love your colouring woman! Very soft and almost feels like a 3D fridge magnet to me. Some parts could use more contrast and/or tone, such as the hair and clothes, but I do understand your time constraints and think you've done an awesome job nontheless.
On the subject of the message, the first value that struck me from the little boys expression was not innocence, but courage/adversity. I think this is mostly because I have nothing to compare him to. For instance, if there were people in the background looking at him in a most pitious manner only then from my point of view he would be considered innocent. But that's just a thought :)

@Me: I don't quite like my background either though I only put it there because it seemed a little TOO plain without one.... Any suggestions for future reference?

@Maiki: Beautiful artwork there, I'm sure we can expect more of a kind from you since I saw your avatar :) Not too sure about the setting but I'm interpreting it as an innocence of knowledge? The boy on the verge of becoming a non-innocent by the (evil) hand that hands him the book. The atmosphere seems kind of melancholic though almost as though when the kid receives (knowledge) his world will be better/more filled O_O

@Reeis: I like that you've left it colourless 'cept for the apple too. Makes for a good concentration. I'm not too sure about their stances though. Would be nice to see the snake from the top instead of bottom of the head. Eve looks like she's being hypnotised instead of seduced because her body is angled away from the snake as though she's trying to break free from a hold?

@Nat: Love the message behind the art. I think your perspective could be tweeked though. At first glance there's nothing wrong with it, but looking at it long enough there's some parts that could use more foreshortening/rounding like the shoulders and feet. Nice use of resources there too :)

@MH: I like your innocent eyes... cept they also look a little scary. Maybe a touch more light in them or something beautiful reflected in them?

@Sara: I think you have a lot to work with Sara and I think you're not doing your messege justice :) The "..." makes the image on the whole slightly comical for me... maybe I've been working too long with comic strips :/

Thanks for the great work and encouragement guys, please feel free to shoot me (though not literally). Aim for improvement~

@ Reeis: I voted for you. And its because you drew a naked girl there so u score... LMAO!!! KIDDING! dont hit me just yet before i have my say XD I like the idea that the story of eve and the fruit came to ur mind because it traces back to the roots of all innocence for humankind. If there was so snake to seduce eve to break the rule, we all wouldn't even know the meaning of guilt to contrast with what is the meaning of innocence in the first place. See, now don't hit me XP

@ Y'ng: at first glance of your art without reading the description, i would just see it as a kid sowing something. i didnt noticed the deformed fingers and the no legs part coz i thought it was a style of drawing. And also, i couldn't tell if the kid is Vietnamese. Maybe should consider the audience's point of view in the near future so that the message goes thru easily. BUT DAMN! YOU HAVE ONE HECK OF COLORING SKILL! LOVE IT! And thank you for sharing this experience of yours on the tragic lives of the agent orange victims, as it reminds us to be grateful for our limbs everyday.

@ Daphne: LOL! you have always had a thing for fairy tales and from your idea description makes me realized that 'hey, that IS how i felt when i was a kid.' and its really good you trace back to that essence of innocence. But c'mon =_= ur art is too simple, i know you can come up with better graphics than that. and like y'ng i have to agree on the bg is not suiting.

@ Maiki: i didn't get the message in your art but.. HOLY GREAT CHILLI OF FIRE! UR ART ROCKS!!! BIG TIME!

@ May Hooi: thanks to your beautiful shading and coloring, you got k-chan believing you modeled that in 3D and we had a few seconds of argument about it XD BUT! i love how you made your art obvious for this theme, good job!

@ Sara: reminds me of Oprah Winfrey shows lately. have you been watching them too? XD yes i really like that strong idea of yours, all you need to work on for now is your composition and coloring so GAMBATTE X3

@ Kelly: D FAT KELL! what happen? D: PUNISHENT!!! XD

@daphne: Yahor, come to think of it, the message somehow a bit contradicting with the artwork. O.O And i didn't even notice it. Tks Daph!

@nat: note to myself, neva do work last minute, cuz when comes to writing a message, it takes me a bloody long time to write one out nicely. This one was a real rush. Tks nat!

@Nat: yea that's true... feel like redoing but have to do the baabaaa one :P Guess it doesn't seem serious enough because I'm using very broad vectors. Especially the background... *stabs self*

Writing from Vietnam...happy but tired... =3=

@Y'ng: yeah... the head and the shoulders look weird, eh? Can't put my finger on what it is though. Any advice?

@Daphne:
About your artwork's background:
I seriously hate it when that happens - coming up with good lines but then not knowing what to do with background >.<

Generally, I've learned to either leave it blank (like my Eve), just add some shadows to the characters (as though there's a floor and a wall), add some random abstract shades of color (like some concept sketches do) or visualize your artwork like a movie scene from the very beginning (complete with props,lighting, background actors etc).

For your unicorn one, maybe you can just go for the shadows option. I think it could be cool if you could only give dark shadows beneath the girl, but light ones under the unicorn - as though mr. mythical creature has not fully materialized yet XD

About your comment on my work:
Thanks! I really appreciate that you can pick up so much from Eve's gestures *sniff*
Can be seen either way, I guess - either she's trying to break free from the snake's hold, or she's turning towards it.
I wanted to display the top of the snake's head in the early stages of this drawing.
Changed it to the bottom cos...for some reason, I feel that it makes the snake look as though it's about to "kiss" her XD;
Yes, my filthy mind's leaning towards...that. kind of. erm. seduction.
hee hee.
erm.
I should shut up now.

@Nat
I won't hit you, I'll get a brick to do that for me.
I would look out for flying bricks from now on, If I were you.

I intended the naked chick there cos I knew I'd get ur perverted vote ^_^*
ANYWAYS. Thanks! I really appreciate knowing that someone can "get my work" XD I like ur input on how we need to know guilt in order to know innocence. I didn't see it that way before.

Btw, I've "spreaded" this blog to a few of my closest friends XD. I think some might comment or vote. Just thought you all should know XD

@Reeis

LOL! Good luck with the flying bricks all the way from Vietnam XD

I can finally comment, yaaaay! Anyway, thanks for the comments guys! Um, the black thing the hand is holding is actually a completely black book. You get a kid doodling around on white papers, who suddenly gets given black papers instead. In a way, I was trying to show 'innocence being tainted' but I was rushing and it didn't show well in this, so I'm sorry! ;;

I love the contributions for this theme, especially Y'ng and Natasha's! I think everyone did a great job conveying this theme. If I need to critic someone, then it'd have to be Reeis', mostly for anatomical reasons (but I'm sure you already know what's wrong by now ;;) and the artwork looks more incomplete rather than simple. Maybe having the text at the left empty space instead and cut the canvas at Eve's waist would have given it a more picturesque feel. :)
